Druing my time in the trades I have had the oportunity to try my hand and nearly every trade around. Some I have taken a liking to and others not so much. Some are easy to pick up and others are painful each time I try. Here is a quick rundown of how I started and where I ended up.
My first job was for a Landlord I met in the Home Depot parking lot, his sons had gone off to medical school and was in need of more cheap labor! At the time I had no construction experience but I was happy to start my career. A quick drive down the street to the first of his many townhomes I was able to set my sights on laminate flooring and a DIY ceiling patch. None of my finest work but I promise you it gets better from here.
The next project I was able to get my hands on was to 'Remodel' my Aunts bathroom. By this time I had grabbed a few tools, a couple YouTube University courses later I was laying LVT and setting shower trim.
Then their deck.
At the same time I left the demolition side of a restoration company and started working on the construction end for another restoration business. They were buddy-buddy with the insurance companies; ie the work was done with cost and speed in mind, not quality.
My time in restoration construction didn't last long and soon I was out of a job looking for another to hone my skills, when I stumbled across a small remodel company in the Twin Cities completing whole house remodels along Lake of the Isles and Summit Avenue, among many smaller jobs to keep us busy.
This is where I spent most of my time in construction, finding just how demanding the work should actually be. Not only was each project time sensitive with the next trade waiting for me to finish, but they also expected near perfection and I would hear about it if there wasn't.
Remodeling immediately piqued my interest and desire to grow as each project gave way to new challenges with each hundred year old house, times of a different code and nominal lumber clashing with the 3.5" two by fours we use today, knob and tube wiring being ripped from the joists, and plaster interiors that crumbled if my blue tape containment was too strong. The care we were able to put into each job proved to me that as I was tearing down homes that had lasted near a century, the work we put in was going to last and look good just as long.
Currently, I'm contracting for a builder in Minnetonka doing trim work and decking, along with hanging doors and windows. As our projects grow so do my skills and efficiency, hoping that YOU will be my next project.
With the knowledge and skills I have gained in the high demand remodel industry so far I am confident in what I know while being ready and willing to face any other challenge that I'm sure is just around the corner.
